Right, -Wl,xxx works fine, passing xxx directly to the linker. If the
linker is GNU ld then you need to use flags that GNU ld understands, and if
the linker is Solaris ld then you need to use flags that Solaris ld
understands.

There's nothing "inappropriate" about this setup.

No it doesn't, that's a bad assumption.

Isn't that the point of testing on different operating systems? If you want
everything to be GNU binutils and GNU Make, don't use other operating
systems.
